  • Our FIRST OBJ Style Challenge – for YOU the OBJ Reader!

In celebration of our very first DESIGN ANNUAL slated to come out in Late Spring 2015, we are announcing a very special OBJ Reader Style Challenge!

An often overlooked, but key piece of your home, is the bookshelf.  We all have one – whether it’s short and faux bamboo, ikea chic, or a simple piece of utilitarian furniture that we use to hold those books that have inspired us.  The challenge may lie in the fact that we often cram our beloved paperbacks and collections on top of each other into limited shelf space.  The fact is that there are few other pieces in your home that can make a bold statement while showing off your collection of, well, anything – including books!

Ready…Set…Style! THE CONTEST: YES! You, our cherished OBJ Reader, can WIN this Style Challenge!  The winner of the Challenge will have their image published* in the upcoming OBJ Design Annual 2015 (*see below for guidelines of submission) AND they winner will receive a special gift from Old Beach Journal from one of our beloved OBJ Merchants.

Check out some of our favorite and inspiring shelves that Team OBJ has posted to our Pinterest board: OBJ Style Challenge – Bookshelves.  Look below for some of those images as well as updates on our blog and Instagram to help inspire you in your assemblage of key pieces, where to get them, and how to make it all work!

    OBJ shelf books blank
Fantastically styled shelves can be grouped by color and size, with accent pieces used to add interest, texture, and layers. Hanging a small mirror or piece of art right on a shelf adds interest, as well as cute boxes and vintage spiritual or ethnic artifacts. Use what you have first before running out to spend extra money.

    Contest submissions and rules!

    1. Style your bookshelf and take a few photos of the completed shelf.  Be sure to note all of the details including dust, lighting, and what may be next to or in front of the shelf.  Size does not matter.  This is YOUR vignette – have fun and share what you want to show off on your shelves.  Collections, mini-bar, coffee table books, or college text books – whatever looks fabulous to you.

    2. Please submit your photos in the highest resolution and best lighting to: style(at)oldbeachjournal(dot)com.  Include your name, address, phone number, and email address.  We would love to hear a little about your bookshelf collection – sentimental? chic? inherited? Let us know!  (If you have questions, please email us)

    3. The contest begins NOW and all submissions must be made no later than March 21, 2015.  That would be the first day of Spring.  So you have the “rest of the winter” to get cracking on your shelves!

    4. The winner will be notified via email, and we will coordinate photography if necessary (if a better image is needed for publication, images of at least 300 dpi are required for printing).  We will also coordinate the delivery of your trophy!

    blue white shells wide
Using vintage pieces will always ground the look you are trying to achieve – whether you have your grandmother’s china, or a set of vintage books you picked up at St. Paul’s. Using the color of seashells as inspiration can immediately add a French Country chic look to shelf. The shells add texture and interest with their organic shapes, as well as helping you edit your color story to a soothing monochromatic scheme.

“That Simons pulls off his show (not a spoiler for design followers) is an achievement. That this narrative is intense and entertaining to audiences — even those unfamiliar with the fashion world — is Tcheng’s considerable accomplishment.”
    – Indiewire

Filmmaker Frédéric Tcheng follows up his work on excellent fashion films, including Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel and Valentino: The Last Emperor, with another masterful exploration of a towering fashion institution. In Dior and I, one enters the storied world that is the House of Christian Dior with a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Raf Simons’ highly anticipated first Haute Couture collection as the iconic brand’s new Artistic Director. From conception through its ultimate exhibition, the process is shown to be a true labor of love by the stoic Simons and a dedicated, charming, and often humorous team of collaborators. Beautifully melding the everyday, pressure-filled components of fashion with an elegant reverence for the history of Dior, Tcheng’s colorful homage to the seamstresses of the atelier is nothing short of magical.

  • What’s in Store: Rib & Rhein, Early August

One of the best shopping enclaves in Newport is not so obvious; discreetly positioned on William Street (off of Bellevue Avenue) in an historic building, Rib & Rhein offers a well-curated collection of clothing for stylish locals and visitors alike.  Upon entering one feels immediately like you are shopping in someone’s perfectly decorated home with an edgy, colorful twist.  Owners Erin and Thomas Ribeiro have created a two-floor shopping destination for men and women, complete with vintage accessories, lounges, and of course, a mini-bar en route to the men’s dressing area.

Hard to find labels are hard enough to track down, much less in tiny Rhode Island.  Rib & Rhien carries incredible selections from the Alabama line Billy Reid, timeless pieces from Etro, stylish seasonal looks by Moncler, hip fashion-blogger favorite ACNE from Sweden, shoes and accessories from Marc by Marc Jacobs and Charlotte Olympia, as well as home accessories by interior designer Kelly Wearstler (for a complete list check out their site at, call 401.619.7575, or visit 86 William Street, Newport).  Do not hesitate to contact Erin, Thomas, or any of their incredible team members; the specialty of the day is always service.  Going out of their way for clients is one of the many elements that sets Rib & Rhein apart from city stores.  Shopping with a boutique experience combined with high luxury and attention to detail (and style!) is a truly unique experience found only in a handful of stores in the world – just one  more incredible merchant keeping standards high, and personal, in Newport.

  • A Retreat to Remember – Eat, Play, Run

When the weather turns warm in New England I often have a recurring fantasy of attending an “Adult Summer Camp”.  Rather than a musty cabin in Maine my personal fantasy leans more towards luxurious accommodations, great meals and amazing conversation. Well lucky for me, this became reality when I attended the “Eat, Play, Run Retreat” at the Norman Bird Sanctuary.

    Farmhouse at Norman Bird Sanctuary

Upon entering the recently renovated Farmhouse with its gorgeous wide wood floors situated on 325+ acres overlooking Newport’s 3rd Beach I knew this location may even surpass the one in my dreams. After being shown our well-appointed room overlooking the sanctuary, the charming staff led us to a yoga and meditation session led by the amazing Jen Myers of Innerlight Yoga. The evening was capped off with an incredible meal around a large farmhouse table expertly prepared by chef Jessica Gorman.  Getting to know our fellow “campers” while engaged in unforgettable conversation, we imbibed a little red wine and adjusted to an “unplugged” weekend.

Saturday morning started easily with a lovely breakfast before our 5K run that trailed us along the beach.  Smoothies and another stretch were waiting for us back in the studio while we relished in the elegance of our experience.  Saturday afternoon and evening were open for exploration; a time to encourage us to experience the sanctuary on our own.  There is nothing like the ease of the Paradise Farmhouse weekend that lulls you to sleep – even before nine on a Saturday night!

Sunday morning we enjoyed more fare and conversation with our fellow guests before a guided hike to Hanging Rock.  At lunch we reflected on our weekend escape; one of the most relaxing aspects was enjoying the fact that this is in our backyard.  The ability to continually discover and revive our perspective of our island home is unparalleled in most places.   We thank the Norman Bird Sanctuary for a lovely and inspiring weekend we will not soon forget – in imagery and Style of Life.

  • Eleutheromaniacs

Eleutheromania (n.) – the intense desire for freedom

The Founding Fathers and their contemporaries were clearly compelled by their eleutheromania to disengage from British rule (and taxes).  Can you imagine such passion to ignite a war that had the potential to backfire and consume an entire society?  Fortunately in the US circa 2014 we do not have to fight for our rights the way they did in the late 1700s.

If I can speak for the OBJ Team, I can assuredly say that we are beyond thankful for the moves those men (and women) made, creeping around our colonial New England cities, planning the ultimate revolt.  We are also thankful for those citizens who continue to volunteer to defend not only our rights but human rights around the world.

Although the Old Beach Journal is meant to inspire and invoke a Style of Life that is, to say the least, colorful and light, we are ultimately exercising our First Amendment rights.  To me there is no better way to celebrate our independence by launching our first issue of Old Beach Journal!

Thank you to all of the supporters of OBJ – family, friends, merchants, and residents.  Happy 4th of July!  #oldbeachjournalapproved

A very special thank you to RMR who continues to inspire me, and whom I become more like every single day.  There is no one else who’s footsteps I would rather follow…

  • Inspired by and for Warhol, an Evening with newportFILM

factory 3 Costume and themed events are de rigueur in Newport, no matter the season. Therefore one is inevitably presented with at least one costume party at some time during the year.  Fancy dress is always optional – but it certainly adds to the festive feeling if you can harness at least a sartorial nod to the evening’s theme.

When I am presented with the theme party I immediately begin chatter about what to wear and start seeking inspiring images.  Our first event of the 2014 season is newportFILM’s Annual Friend-raiser with a Warhol theme.  Immediately I think of pop art and Andy’s Campbell’s Soup screen-printed fashion, the Brillo box dress, and bold 1960s mod.  Warhol also dabbled with the beatniks, cross-dressers, and of course legendary Studio 54 disco chic (all in one silvery factory setting).  The choices are too many.  Should there be an outfit change mid-party?  I didn’t even mention Edie Sedgwick and her swinging earrings framed by a pixie cut and fluffy fur coats…

Join newportFILM on Saturday, March 1st at Christie’s in Newport for the annual Friend-raiser.  A good time will be had by all – and a great (glittery) way to support one of Newport’s excellent enrichment programs!

  • The Whalers

bring back the whale hartford whalers I am not a native of New England.  Therefore I was not living here when the Hartford Whalers were in full swing. However, I have lived here long enough, cohabitating with diehard hockey fans, to know the Whalers were the team.  (I even cluelessly attended Carolina Hurricanes games while in college never knowing this team used to be the Whalers…)  So for all of my born-and-bred hockey friends who still covet Whalers gear, maybe this print will find its way to your gallery wall.  $60 by Hartford Prints.

  • Sneakers with Style

At the finale of a very snowy New York Fashion Week, there was one thing many show-goers had in common: sensible footwear.  Considering Newport has had a similar weather-related fate, one must turn to their arsenal of style ideas to keep the shoe choices fresh and interesting.

Sorels, LL Bean Boots, and various shapes of Uggs have certainly gotten the job done.  After months of wearing the same pair of foul weather foot protection it may be time to change it up.  Skipping over piles of grey snow and black ice en route to the Cooke House fireplace requires treading heavily with grace and style.  Looking to the streets of NYFW may help islanders choose colorful alternatives to Thinsulate-lined anything.

Couture Chanel beaded sneakers or their camellia collection may not be on the radar.  If not, check out for their laboratory of endless color and texture combinations that may inspire a truly one-of-a-kind couture sneaker fit for Newport’s cobbles and the gym.
